Publish Date: 2002-08-01
Features: This book collects calligraphy works ranging from the Shang and Zhou dynasties to the contemporary era, totaling over one hundred volumes. The volumes are divided into two major categories:
1. Period-based volumes;
2. Calligrapher-based volumes.
Each volume is organized into ten sections, with additional sections for seal carving, essays, appendices, and supplements. The period-based volumes include works such as oracle bone inscriptions, bronze inscriptions, bamboo slips, silk documents, pottery and brick inscriptions, stele inscriptions, carved stones, cliff carvings, and Buddhist sculptures. These works are categorized and organized chronologically. The calligrapher-based volumes are divided into three types:
- Class A volumes feature works by a single calligrapher;
- Class B volumes feature works by two to four calligraphers;
- Class C volumes feature works by multiple or numerous calligraphers within a specific period.
The table of contents for each volume, excluding the preface and general index, is arranged according to the two types of volume organization. The period-based volumes include:
- Color reproductions of artifacts or selected pages from illustrations;
- General and specialized essays;
- Plate reproductions of works;
- Explanations of plates;
- Color reproductions of calligraphy albums or selected works;
- Biographies and specialized essays on calligraphers;
- General overview of calligraphy for the period;
- Plate reproductions of works;
- Explanations of works;
- Selected calligrapher's essays;
- Calligrapher's itinerary diagrams;
- Main reference bibliographies;
- Plate index.
The diagrams in each volume are based on the "Historical Atlas of China" edited by Tan Qiqi and other editors. The book is entirely printed in traditional characters to avoid confusion between ancient and modern scripts.
