Features: Foreign opera, especially opera from some Western European countries, is not only the essence of overall vocal art creation but also one of the sources of the development of vocal arts among different ethnic groups worldwide. Its vocal styles form the repertoire foundation for bel canto singing or schools. As vocal teaching materials, foreign opera arias and recitatives have been thoroughly tested in teaching practices in China. Over the decades, they have nurtured a large number of singers and vocal educators, some of whom have even made a name for themselves on the international stage, becoming outstanding figures in bel canto singing. Meanwhile, in the teaching of folk vocal arts, how to apply the experiences and methods of bel canto singing in China has achieved encouraging results. In the sinicization of bel canto singing, we have either carried out or continue to engage in valuable practices and explorations. For this reason, the construction of teaching repertoire for foreign opera has demonstrated its importance in this context. In the selection process, we have also carefully curated arias with both teaching and appreciation value, arranged in chronological order based on the publication and performance years of the operas, and listed in the order of character appearances, so that they can serve different vocal teaching purposes. This Selected Arias is divided into two volumes, collecting 100 famous European opera arias from the period of Gluck's reforms to the nationalist music school, representing different eras, countries, and composers. Among them, there are 40 soprano arias, 16 mezzo-soprano arias, 22 tenor arias, and 22 baritone and bass arias. This volume, General Teaching Notes, introduces the aesthetic characteristics of opera art, briefly outlines the history of its birth and development, and presents the singing and teaching system of bel canto singing. Additionally, each aria includes "Teaching and Performance Tips," providing teaching experience and reference for aria instruction, as well as convenience for teachers and students in finding resources. This book is characterized by its teaching, documentary, and appreciative value. It offers targeted teaching requirements for specific content, genre varieties, stylistic features, regional categories, vocal method distinctions, and difficulty levels.
