Sand and dust weather refers to a general term for weather phenomena where wind airborne dust and sand, causing air turbidity. It is one of the main disasterous weather conditions affecting northern China. The occurrence of sand and dust weather often causes significant losses to local people's lives and property. In recent years, with the development of society and economy, the implementation of the Western Development Strategy, and the increasing impact of sand and dust weather on the national economy, ecological environment, and social activities, the disasterous effects of sand and dust weather have attracted growing attention from both the domestic and international communities. China has placed increasing importance on sand and dust weather, gradually improving monitoring methods and advancing research, which has significantly enhanced the accuracy of sand and dust weather forecasts, contributing greatly to the prevention and mitigation of losses caused by such weather.
To meet the needs of scientific research on sand and dust weather and to provide meteorological technical personnel at various meteorological stations with more comprehensive information on sand and dust weather, enabling them to better understand the patterns of sand and dust weather activity and improve forecast accuracy, the National Meteorological Center compiled the Sand and Dust Weather Yearbook (2004). The compilation of this yearbook was made possible through the strong collaboration and support of meteorological bureaus in all provinces, cities, and autonomous regions, as well as numerous meteorological stations across the country.
The content of the Sand and Dust Weather Yearbook includes descriptions of the general characteristics of sand and dust weather processes during the year, analysis of the meteorological conditions that lead to sand and dust weather, as well as charts and graphs showing the spatial and temporal distribution of sand and dust weather throughout the year and related major sand and dust weather events.
