Features: The Public English Test System (PETS), abbreviated as PETS, is a national English proficiency test designed and administered by the National Education Examination Center. PETS is China's only multi-level authoritative English testing system aimed at all citizens, with no restrictions on age, occupation, or level of education. People can choose to take any level of the test based on their English proficiency. PETS consists of two relatively independent assessment parts: a written test and an oral test, which comprehensively evaluate candidates' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Candidates who pass the test are awarded corresponding English proficiency certificates to meet the needs of English ability assessment in society and the talent market. The standards for PETS Level 2 and Level 4 exams are used to reform the English sections of the current college entrance examination and graduate entrance examination, respectively. PETS Level 2 and Level 3 exams are used to replace the public English tests in vocational and undergraduate examinations of higher education self-study programs, while PETS Level 5 exam has replaced the English test in the National Foreign Language Proficiency Test (WSK·EPT). With the vigorous development of PETS exams across various regions in China, the National Education Examination Center revised the test syllabus in 2006 based on actual needs. The new syllabus not only provides detailed introductions to the design background, level standards, test format, structure, content, and sample papers of PETS but also includes a VCD disc featuring computer-based oral tests and live oral test recordings. To enable candidates to study and prepare fully and effectively, the National Education Examination Center has also organized the compilation of the Standard Coursebook for the Public English Test System (2006 Edition). The aforementioned test syllabus and Standard Coursebook are exclusively published and distributed by Higher Education Press under the authorization of the National Education Examination Center.
