Patient's question:
I have uterine fibroids measuring 26x19mm. Then, I went to the Gynecology Department of Foshan Second People's Hospital for a check-up. The doctor prescribed me Marvelon birth control pills, one tablet a day. After taking it for nine days, I started my period. In this situation, I don't want to take Marvelon. Can I stop taking it after 21 days?Doctor's answer:
Treatment with MedicationTreatment with medication has seen many new advancements.
I. Indications for Medication Treatment
1. Young women who wish to preserve their fertility. If infertility or miscarriage is caused by uterine fibroids during the childbearing age, medication can lead to fibroid shrinkage, promoting conception and fetal viability.
2. Premenopausal women with fibroids that are not too large and mild symptoms. Medication can cause uterine atrophy and menopause, leading to fibroid shrinkage and avoiding surgery.
3. Women who have surgical indications but currently have contraindications that require treatment before surgery.
4. Patients with concurrent internal or external medical conditions who cannot undergo surgery or are unwilling to do so.
5. Before choosing medication treatment, a diagnostic (D&C) with endometrial biopsy should be performed to rule out malignancy, especially for those with menstrual disorders or increased menstrual flow. The D&C serves both diagnostic and hemostatic purposes.
