Features: Beyond Aesthetics collects philosophical essays on art and related issues by one of the most important art philosophers of our time. Unlike traditional aesthetic theories, which claim that authorial intention, art history, moral, and emotional responses are irrelevant to the art experience, No?l Carroll advocates a more pluralistic and common-sense perspective, believing that all these factors can play a legitimate role in our encounter with artworks. The book consistently combines the construction and explanation of philosophical theories with descriptive examples, including high culture works and avant-garde works, as well as popular culture works, jokes, horror novels, and suspense films.
