Zhang Zhao, styled Tiantian, was known as Jingnan and also as Tianping Jushi. He was from Songjiang, Shanghai, during the Qianlong era. He was a great calligrapher of the Qianlong period, often serving as the emperor's substitute calligrapher. He excelled in running script and regular script and was skilled in the "palace and courtyard style" of calligraphy. He had a high level of insight and deeply understood Buddhist scriptures, with many of his poems containing Zen phrases. His calligraphy initially drew inspiration from Dong Qichang, later evolving to incorporate the styles of Yan Zhenqing and Mi Fu. His calligraphy was characterized by an open and expansive spirit, with a profound and robust style. He was also skilled in painting orchids and occasionally depicted ink plum blossoms, with sparse flowers and delicate petals, exuding extreme elegance and refinement. He wrote "Tianping Studio Calligraphy and Painting Annotations" and "Tian Tian Jushi Collection," and his works were compiled into the "Tianping Studio Seal Collection."
