Expressiveness of lines in human figure sketching

Author: Jin Song
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-03-01
Features: This book is organized around the theme of "line expressiveness" in human figure sketching. The entire book consists of four main components:
1. Jin Song's human figure sketches. Most of these works were created with students in my classes over the years. They reflect my teacher lineage, influences, professional characteristics, and explorations in shaping and line expression, showing both strengths and obvious shortcomings and (regrets). The insights gained from both positive and negative aspects are presented here, and interested readers can compare and critique them in conjunction with my accompanying text.
2. Excellent human figure sketches from both Chinese and international artists. These are used as supplementary illustrations for the text, primarily selected for their richness, diversity in line expressiveness, and the styles and demeanor of the artists. The purpose is to compensate for the limitations of my own works and provide readers with a broader perspective and research space.
3. A selection of image materials related to line expressiveness in human figure sketches to facilitate the articulation of the issues I focus on. Since line expression in human figure sketching is not an isolated form of expression, but rather linked to the artist's era, region, culture, cultivation, and visual background (i.e., attention to "extra-painting skills"), these images are included.
4. The main content of the text: On one hand, it draws from my experiences and teachings during my student days; on the other hand, it reflects my insights and reflections from teaching human figure sketches; and on the other hand, it includes my thoughts during the process of compiling the book material. This does not mean my human figure sketches have reached the level I envision, but rather aims to present these thoughts for reference and discussion.
Finally, the book concludes with "Humanity, Line, Life, Symbolism," which serves as both my practical reflections and the fundamental viewpoint of the book.
