Patient's question:
Please let me know what precautions should be taken after having an IUD inserted? How long can one have sexual intercourse?Doctor's answer:
1. After insertion of the IUD, rest for 2 to 3 days and maintain cleanliness of the external genitalia. Abstain from sexual intercourse and avoid tub baths or showers within two weeks to prevent infection.2. If excessive bleeding, prolonged duration, increased lower abdominal and back pain occur after IUD insertion, seek medical attention to determine whether the IUD should be removed or replaced.
3. Menstruation remains normal after IUD insertion, but some may experience increased menstrual flow in the first 2 to 3 months and occasional bloody discharge. These symptoms usually subside gradually within 3 months of insertion, returning to normal naturally.
4. In rare cases, the IUD may fall out along with menstrual periods or bowel movements within 2 to 3 months after insertion. The highest rate of IUD expulsion occurs between 3 and 6 months post-insertion, accompanied by increased bleeding and infection. Therefore, it is recommended that women undergo follow-up examinations at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after insertion, followed by annual check-ups thereafter.
5. If short-term amenorrhea or delayed menstruation by several days occurs after IUD insertion, followed by persistent or intermittent light irregular vaginal bleeding or lower abdominal pain, ectopic pregnancy should be considered. Immediate medical examination is necessary for confirmation.
6. During the first 2 to 3 days after IUD insertion, slight vaginal bleeding or increased discharge may occur, typically resolving naturally within 3 to 5 days.
