From the creation and re-creation of female characters in her dramatic works, we can explore how Yuan Changying blended Chinese and Western cultures and arts to create a uniquely Chinese modern theater. She was one of China's earliest renowned female scholars and a specialist in foreign literature and the history of art. As early as the late 1920s, she wrote French Literature (edited series; 1929, Commercial Press). Later, she introduced Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Hardy to Chinese readers. In the 1940s, she wrote French Literature again (1944, Commercial Press), and also authored works such as History of Western Music. She was a university professor who taught courses on drama, French, Greek mythology, Greek tragedy, Shakespeare, and modern European drama for decades on the lecture platform.
