Vaginal opening is white and itchy

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: I developed cervical erosion last year and took many medications, but they were ineffective. In December last year, when I went to the hospital, the doctor prescribed Fucocin effervescent tablets and Yuqing Antipruritic Wash for me. However, when the medication was almost finished, I experienced white discharge from the vaginal opening and itching. Now I am on my period and don't know how to handle it. I wanted to go to the hospital, but I thought it wouldn't be a good time for examination during my period, so I didn't go. I still have two days left until my period ends. Currently, I rinse the area with a saltwater solution after taking a shower every day. Is this correct? What could be the cause of this situation? Please help me, thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Hello: You may have candidal vulvovaginitis, which can be diagnosed through a routine vaginal discharge test. The most common symptoms of candidal vulvovaginitis are external genital itching and a significant increase in vaginal discharge. The itching symptoms of patients may vary in intensity and frequency. The itching caused by candidal vulvovaginitis is generally more pronounced than that caused by trichomoniasis. Severe itching can make the patient unable to sit or lie down comfortably, and they may have difficulty sleeping and eating. Patients may also experience a burning sensation in the vagina, which is particularly noticeable during urination. In more severe cases, symptoms such as frequent urination, painful urination, and pain during intercourse may also occur. An increase in vaginal discharge is another major symptom of this condition. The discharge is usually viscous and may be white or yellow, or it may be thin. Typical candidal vulvovaginitis discharge appears as cottage cheese-like or creamy clumps. During a gynecological examination, the following may be observed: depending on the severity of the condition, the labia minora and vaginal mucosa may show varying degrees of congestion and edema of the labia minora. The vagina may contain a significant amount of viscous discharge, or the vaginal mucosa may be covered with a white membrane. If the membrane is removed, the exposed mucosa may appear red, swollen, and eroded, or there may be superficial ulcers.
