Irregular menstrual cycle, how to regulate

Patient's question:

Because my menstrual cycle has been quite irregular for the past six months, and the effect of taking traditional Chinese medicine to regulate it has not been significant, I am unable to calculate my ovulation period. I would like to know if there are any methods to accurately determine my ovulation period. My friend suggested that I should take care of my health before getting pregnant. Could you please recommend any effective methods to improve my physical condition? I would greatly appreciate it if the doctors could provide me with more suggestions and advice! Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Hello: For health maintenance, diet should be the primary focus. As the saying goes, "food is better than medicine." In daily life, it's advisable to consume high-protein, high-calorie foods, while avoiding spicy and greasy dishes. During the ovulation period, you can use the basal body temperature method to track it.
The basal body temperature (BBT) is measured upon waking after a long period of sleep (usually in the morning), before any physical activity or speaking. Under normal circumstances, the basal body temperature of women of reproductive age is lower in the first half of the menstrual cycle and even lower during ovulation. After ovulation, it may suddenly or gradually rise by 0.3–0.6°C within 24 hours to a few days.
Therefore, it's best to start measuring your basal body temperature on the first day of your menstrual period and persist in taking readings daily. Record the results on graph paper for observation and analysis.
