Do you need to meet any conditions for medication abortion?

Patient's question:

I want to have a medication abortion. I have already gone to the hospital for an ultrasound, and the results showed the uterus to be 42mm long, 37mm wide, and 36mm thick. However, the doctor said it was too small and told me to wait a few more days before having a medication abortion. But I saw online that it's better to have a medication abortion as soon as possible, and it can be done within 49 days after the last menstrual period. So I have some doubts and don't quite understand.

Doctor's answer:

Facing the increasingly popular trend of "medication-induced abortion," women preparing to undergo this procedure might consider the advice offered by gynecology and obstetrics experts:

  ● The medication must be taken by individuals who have been pregnant for no more than 45 days and are under the age of 34;

  ● Good physical health, with no contraindications. Contraindications include: a history of or current severe systemic diseases, impaired liver or kidney function, allergic constitution, heart disease, hypertension, anemia, asthma, glaucoma, pruritus during pregnancy, and suspected ectopic pregnancy, long-term heavy medication use, smoking more than 10 cigarettes daily, and alcoholism;;

  ● An ultrasound examination should be performed before taking the medication to confirm an intrauterine pregnancy;

  ● At least 3 to 5 days of rest should be observed after the abortion;

  ● Strictly follow medical advice and attend follow-up appointments on schedule;

  ● Do not take the medication consecutively;

  ● The hospital chosen for consultation must have emergency conditions (such as the ability to perform emergency dilation and curettage, intravenous fluids, and blood transfusions);

  ● Do not use it as a common form of contraception.

After all, medication-induced abortion is merely a measure for failed contraception. It can cause harm to women, and both medical professionals and ethicists agree that the priority is contraception. During the process of contraception, men should understand how to care for women and take on a portion of the responsibility. Women, on the other hand, should proactively learn and master contraceptive methods, enhance their resilience, and shift from passivity to proactivity.
