When can a pregnant woman have an ultrasound?

Patient's question:

Hello! When is the appropriate time for a pregnant woman to have an ultrasound? My last menstrual period was on October 22, 2005. Could I have an ultrasound in February 2006? Does an ultrasound have any effect on the fetus?

Doctor's answer:

A check-up every 12 weeks (three months) during pregnancy to promptly identify early pregnancy symptoms and start health care early. In the second trimester of pregnancy (13-28 weeks), a monthly check-up is recommended to screen for high-risk pregnancies. If high-risk factors are identified, the frequency of check-ups should be increased as appropriate, and necessary corrective treatments should be provided. In the third trimester of pregnancy (28-36 weeks), a check-up every two weeks is recommended to promptly identify factors affecting normal delivery and pregnancy-related complications or comorbidities.
