Took emergency contraception pill, started bleeding now, what is this actually

Patient's question:

I had sex with my boyfriend on the night of December 25th. To avoid pregnancy, I took emergency contraception on the afternoon of the 27th. I know that as long as there is a period after the act, it means I'm not pregnant. On January 1st, I started bleeding from below, but the amount was not much and it was dark brown. On the afternoon of January 3rd, I tested with a pregnancy test and it came out negative. From the 2nd to the 5th, I had menstrual blood, which was of normal color but slightly less in amount. At first, I was very sure that it was my period. But from the 12th to the 16th, I had bleeding from below again, which was bright red and very light in amount. Later, I found out that emergency contraception can cause menstrual irregularities and vaginal bleeding. I am now very confused and don't know what to think about it.

Doctor's answer:

Bleeding after taking birth control pills is withdrawal bleeding, which is normal and indicates successful contraception. You can rest assured. It is recommended to maintain a positive mindset, avoid cold and stimulating foods, and use other contraceptive methods during sexual activity, such as condoms. Emergency contraception pills should not be taken more than three times a year.
