Patient's question:
In 2004, there was once a time when there were blood streaks in the leukorrhea, which were quite severe and dark red. Recently, it appeared again, but only with blood streaks. Could you please tell me what might be the reasons for this phenomenon? Is it related to overexertion and tension? Thank you!Doctor's answer:
Bleeding mixed with leukorrhea may sometimes appear pink or dark red. It could be caused by benign conditions such as cervical polyps, cervical erosion, submucosal uterine fibroids, or senile vaginitis, but it is also important to be vigilant about the possibility of malignant tumors such as vaginal cancer or cervical cancer. The formation of normal leukorrhea in women is related to the effects of estrogen. It appears as a white, paste-like or egg-white-like substance, which is odorless, non-irritating, and slightly acidic.
If there are changes in the quality or quantity, such as an increase in volume or changes in color or odor, it is considered pathological leukorrhea. This occurs due to certain reasons that disrupt the normal environment of the vagina or as a result of certain gynecological diseases (e.g., inflammation of the reproductive organs). Generally, pathological leukorrhea can be classified into the following types:
1. Egg-white-like or white watery leukorrhea. Although it may appear normal, the volume increases. It is important to consider conditions such as endometrial hyperplasia, ovarian dysfunction, or vaginal adenosis. Additionally, systemic diseases like anemia, diabetes, or weakened physical health in women may also cause this type of leukorrhea.
2. Yellow or yellow-green purulent leukorrhea with a foul odor. This is mostly caused by vaginal inflammation, with trichomoniasis being the most common. It is often accompanied by itching and pain in the external genitalia and vagina.
3. Cheese-like or curd-like leukorrhea. This is a typical symptom of candidal vaginitis.
4. Watery leukorrhea, resembling rice water. If it has a strong odor, it should be a cause for concern.
5. Bloody leukorrhea.
It is recommended to undergo a checkup.
