Should I stop taking medication? Which contraception method is good

Patient's question:

I (unmarried) have been taking a birth control pill called "Mefloquine" for a while, and my period lasted for ten days straight. It also came with breast tenderness and pain so severe that I couldn't even touch them. In this situation, should I stop taking the medication? Also, could you recommend a better method of birth control?

Doctor's answer:

Women with regular menstrual cycles typically ovulate about 14-16 days before their next expected period. In the 2-3 days before and after this date, it is considered unsafe, while other days are considered safe. During the ovulation period, some women may experience mild abdominal pain, bloating, clear and stretchy cervical mucus, or slight bleeding, along with increased libido. However, other factors can also cause similar symptoms, and long-term reliance on this method is not very safe.
