After a D&C procedure, there is always a sensation of heaviness in the lower abdomen, accompanied by a slight, thread-like pain.

Patient's question:

I have a question to ask: In early 2004, I had an abortion by uterine aspiration, and nothing unusual happened afterward. However, in the past three months, I've been experiencing a constant sensation of heaviness in my lower abdomen, along with occasional mild to moderate pain. My lower back also aches, with the pain fluctuating in intensity. The pain worsens after sexual intercourse with my partner. What could be the cause of this condition, and how should it be treated? Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

After an abortion, bleeding usually stops within a few days, with a maximum duration of up to two weeks. For less traumatic procedures like painless abortions, bleeding may even stop by the evening of the same day. The amount of bleeding after an abortion should not exceed the normal menstrual flow. If bleeding persists for more than a week after a painless abortion, it may be due to inadequate rest, leading to poor uterine recovery, a condition known as uterine contractions. Alternatively, it could be caused by an inflammatory condition resulting in continued bleeding.
