Patient's question:
If some sperm is released into a woman's vagina but flows out shortly after, can pregnancy still occur?First follow-up question: It has been 24 hours already. Should I take birth control pills?
Second follow-up question: My period started on the 24th of last month. Is it currently safe? Will I still get pregnant during the safe period?
Doctor's answer:
Hello:Does semen flowing out of the vagina after intercourse cause infertility? Since the anterior and posterior walls of the vagina are normally close together, the internal cavity is not large. During intercourse, the vagina expands to a certain extent, but it returns to normal quickly afterward. The vagina cannot accommodate a large amount of liquid. A man typically ejects 4 to 6 milliliters of semen per time, which is initially semi-fluid and jelly-like. After intercourse, some semen may flow out when the penis is withdrawn, but not all of it. The remaining semen accumulates in the posterior fornix of the vagina, where the cervix is immersed. Sperm enters the vagina through the external opening of the cervix, which does not affect fertility.
If you do not want to get pregnant, it is recommended to take birth control medication.
