Features: Based on the author's frontline teaching experience in preparing senior high school students for the English middle school entrance exam, we have compiled 25 sets of timed training exercises for junior high school English reading ability, following the original format of the exam's reading questions. Each set of exercises is designed as a template for the exam's reading section, including 1 cloze test and 4 reading comprehension passages. The reason for combining cloze tests and reading comprehension in these exercises is that these two are the main question types in English exams that assess reading ability and are also the most challenging parts for many students. Additionally, they account for the largest proportion of the English exam score in secondary school entrance exams. Therefore, the authors believe that these two components should not be trained separately. The exercises in this book are arranged from easy to difficult, with each set recommended to be completed within 45 minutes. Students can set a fixed time each week and conduct training according to their own circumstances. During training, record the start and end times, and after completion, summarize the results, calculating the time spent and accuracy rate. After a period of training, evaluate whether your English reading ability has improved and by how much. Whether the time taken decreases or the correct answer rate improves, it is progress. Moreover, as the exercises progress, the questions become more challenging, and students should take this into account when assessing their performance.
According to the difficulty coefficient regulations for reading passages in the new English curriculum standards, the difficulty coefficient of each passage is listed at the end for reference. Among them: 70-80 indicates a relatively difficult passage to read; 80-90 indicates an easy passage to read; and 90-100 indicates a very easy passage to read. The higher the difficulty coefficient, the easier the passage, but this does not indicate the difficulty of the questions posed.
At the end of each set of exercises, answers and explanations are provided. Additionally, at the beginning of the book, detailed techniques for solving cloze tests and reading comprehension questions are thoroughly explained. We hope that students will carefully reflect on and summarize these techniques while reading this book. Through extensive training, they will gradually master the application of these techniques.
