How to deal with finger joint pain during pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Hello!
I am 27 and a half weeks pregnant. Recently, when I wake up in the morning, my hands' joints feel a bit painful, and it hurts a little when I clench my fists. It's also a bit numb, but others say my feet should swell, and mine are fine—everything's good. What could be the reason? Is it a lack of some vitamins?
Also, at 22 weeks, I had an ultrasound check, and the doctor said the baby's position wasn't good. The placenta is in the anterior wall, grade 1. When should I have another ultrasound to check the baby's position again?

Doctor's answer:

1. This is mainly due to edema during pregnancy. Severe edema can compress nerves, leading to pain in the bones and joints. In the morning, the pain can be extremely severe, and there may be a feeling of difficulty opening fingers.
2. Calcium deficiency can cause muscle spasms and pain in the bones and joints, which is related to fetal development during pregnancy. A large amount of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D is required during pregnancy. If these nutrients are insufficient and lead to calcium deficiency, it can easily cause joint pain and muscle spasms, especially at night when sleeping. Slight movements of the calf can trigger cramps.
3. During pregnancy, as the body prepares for childbirth, hormones cause joints and ligaments to relax (commonly referred to as "opening the bone gap"). Therefore, not only the hands but also the lower back, legs, and pelvis may gradually become uncomfortable in the later stages of pregnancy. However, this is completely normal. If any abnormal symptoms occur, or if a particular area is especially painful, it is important to consult a doctor promptly.
