Features: From Chang'e flying to the moon to Xu Fu's eastern journey, the Queen Mother of the West once gave the hero and tyrant Hou Yi two elixirs of immortality—lingzhi grass. Hou Yi's wife, Chang'e, worried that if Hou Yi truly achieved immortality, the people would never have peace. So she secretly ate the elixir and unexpectedly became as light as a swallow, flying to the bright moon and achieving immortality. This may be the earliest recorded story about humans' desire to pursue immortality.
There is more substantial evidence regarding the First Emperor of China—Qin Shi Huang, who, after ascending the throne, made one of his most important tasks to send a man named Xu Fu to the mythical island of Penglai in search of the elixir of life. Unfortunately, Xu Fu never returned, and Qin Shi Huang passed away the following year. Subsequently, every emperor and high official throughout the dynasties placed the pursuit of immortality as their top priority. Since they lacked the ability to achieve it themselves, they gathered ancient alchemists to refine elixirs for them. In these attempts, the alchemists' fantasies and skills were widely applied. Of course, all these efforts ultimately ended in failure.
When the desire for immortality, after countless failures, finally shattered, people began to become more rational and realistic, settling for a more practical pursuit of a better quality of life. Men focused more on maintaining enduring sexual vitality (delaying the aging of sexual function), while women emphasized preserving their youthful appearance. Since then, the pursuit of anti-aging has once again become a popular interest and aspiration for everyone, from emperors and high officials to ordinary people.
To this day, whether in China or abroad, the trend of pursuing anti-aging continues to advance, and scientific progress is bringing this reasonable demand closer to reality. In the 21st century, anti-aging has become an important and hot topic in international preventive medicine. The Anti-Aging Medical Society was established in the United States, and the Anti-Aging Medical College of the United States was also founded. In China, the Anti-Aging Professional Committee was established as a branch of the Chinese Gerontology Society. Today, with the increasing aging of the population, a trend of anti-aging and resisting aging has emerged in China, becoming a new fashion for the entire nation to pursue improved quality of life, living standards, and survival standards.
The relentless human effort to pursue longevity has been passed down since the Han Dynasty. Liu An, the Prince of Huainan, was said to have longed for the secret of immortality. After the news spread, eight elderly men came to seek an audience, claiming to possess the method of eternal youth. Upon hearing his attendants' report, Liu An said, "If they themselves are already so old, how could they possibly teach me the secret of immortality?" and refused to meet them. The old men laughed and said, "Why do you look down on us for being old?" and then transformed into children one by one. From then on, people began to regard the restoration of youth as "reversing the aging process."
In Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West, it is lightly written that "reversing the aging process is easy, but the path to transcending the ordinary is not far," but truly achieving anti-aging is far from easy. Throughout history, humans have always desired longevity and have made various attempts, some of which were truly strange and bizarre. The ancient Egyptians, for example, sought to extend their lifespans...
