What is polycystic ovary syndrome?

Patient's question:

Doctor: What is polycystic ovary syndrome? What are its clinical symptoms? How can you know if you have polycystic ovary syndrome?
First follow-up question: Today, I went for an ultrasound (abdominal) because of lower back pain and bloating. The results are as follows:
Uterus:
Anteriorly positioned, size 433934, cervix thickness 24, clear contour, normal shape, endometrial line centrally located, thickness 6, homogeneous muscle layer echo distribution, no definite mass observed;
Adnexa:
Left ovary size 3426, with an internal 2416 anechoic area (possibly a follicle).

Doctor's answer:

Hello, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, anovulation, hirsutism, obesity, infertility combined with bilateral ovarian enlargement showing cystic changes are collectively referred to as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Patients may exhibit all of the typical symptoms or only some of them. However, infertility caused by ovulation disorders is the main clinical manifestation of PCOS. The clinical manifestations of PCOS vary in severity and are most common in women of reproductive age (20-40 years). Typical patients with PCOS primarily exhibit the following aspects:
1. Menstrual oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea
2. Infertility
3. Obesity: Approximately half of the patients exhibit this symptom, with increased hair growth that is coarse, dark, and sometimes shows a masculine distribution. Some patients may also have acne.
4. Bilateral ovarian enlargement: The volume of the ovaries can be determined through laparoscopic visualization or ultrasound imaging. To determine whether you have PCOS, it is still recommended to visit a hospital for examination.
