I have some itching in my groin area, what could be the reason?

Patient's question:

The first itching occurred after my period, something that had never happened before, and it became even worse after intercourse, itching even the vagina. I don’t know if this is a gynecological issue? (I can guarantee that my husband and I are the only sexual partners.) There are no other abnormalities in the genital area, and my discharge is also normal—just itching. I used chloramphenicol eye ointment, but it still itched. Then I took metronidazole, used clindamycin suppositories, and gynecological suppositories, which provided some relief, but then my period came. During my period, I couldn’t even use sanitary pads, but after the period, the itching returned. Now, whenever my discharge increases, it itches. After medication, I feel like there’s little sensation in the vagina, but the external genital area still itches. Since taking the medication, my discharge has been particularly heavy these past few days.

Doctor's answer:

Vaginal itching is a symptom caused by multiple factors, often resulting from the excessive abnormal vaginal discharge produced by trichomoniasis or fungal infections leading to vaginitis, which irritates the external genitalia. If there is the use of disinfectant solutions to rinse the external genitalia or vagina, or the insertion of certain medications (such as sulfonamides, furacilin, strongly alkaline soaps, or potassium permanganate solutions) into the vagina, it may cause allergic reactions or dermatitis in the external genitalia, also leading to itching. During the menstrual period, if hygiene is not properly maintained and the external genitalia are not frequently cleaned, menstrual blood or vaginal secretions may accumulate for a long time in the external genitalia. Alternatively, wearing synthetic underwear daily keeps the external genitalia in a consistently moist and warm environment, often causing itching. It is recommended to visit a formal hospital's gynecology department for pathological examinations of vaginal or cervical secretions to confirm the diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment.
