No embryo was found. Is the left lower abdominal pain an ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: My last menstrual period was on October 21st, and I have now been amenorrheic for 45 days. A urine test was positive, and the doctor said it was early pregnancy. Today, I had a color Doppler ultrasound, but no embryo was found either inside or outside the uterus. An electrocardiogram, blood test, and coagulation profile all showed normal results. Between October 21st and November 21st, I frequently experienced mild, dull pain in the left lower abdomen. Since November 21st, I have not felt any pain. Could I have an ectopic pregnancy? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Generally, at 45 days of pregnancy, an ultrasound can detect a gestational sac in the uterus. It is usually necessary to wait until around 50 days to check via ultrasound to see the gestational sac. Currently, an ultrasound cannot determine if it is an ectopic pregnancy. You can monitor blood HCG daily. If the blood HCG doubles every other day, it indicates an intrauterine pregnancy. If the growth is slow, it could be considered an ectopic pregnancy. I hope my answer is helpful to you.
