What is the reason for diarrhea and abdominal pain after pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I'm about one and a half months pregnant. How many times have I had sexual intercourse with my husband, and I'm afraid of a miscarriage. Every time I have my period, my stomach hurts. Now I'm not having my period, and I have diarrhea. Sometimes it hurts like when I'm having my period, in a series of attacks. What's going on?

Doctor's answer:

Abdominal pain in the early stages of pregnancy has many causes. Lower abdominal pain in the early stages of pregnancy is mostly attributed to the stretching of the ligaments in the uterus as it expands due to pregnancy. Additionally, changes in the relative positions of organs and pressure during pregnancy can also cause dull lower abdominal pain or even spasms. This is considered physiological pain and does not require treatment. The most common pathological abdominal pain is threatened miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, if you eat spoiled or very cold food, it can cause intestinal cramps, leading to abdominal pain for the pregnant mother. Acute gastritis, gastroenteritis, acute pancreatitis, and degeneration of uterine fibroids are also possible causes and require timely medical attention, symptomatic treatment, to avoid worsening of the condition or miscarriage.
