Publish Date: 2005-10-01
Features: This volume includes works written by Engels from December 1833 to October 1842. Except for a few literary essays from his secondary school years, the majority were written during his time as an apprentice and businessman in Bremen and his service in the army in Berlin. These works reflect the formation process of his revolutionary democratic thought and materialist worldview. Engels closely followed the intellectual struggles and social realities of Germany at the time. He wrote a series of articles titled "Letters from Bremen" for the newspaper "Morning Chronicle of the Knowledge World" and "General Herald," each with distinct content. In "Rationalism and Piety" and "The Theological Controversy," he commented on the debate between piety and rationalism in theology, exposed the mystical nature of piety, affirmed the positive role of rationalism, and called for unity under the banner of reason to fight against the darkness of religious forces.
