Can ectopic pregnancy be detected with a pregnancy test?

Patient's question:

I have been 18 days past my period, and the early pregnancy test is negative. My period usually delays by a few days, but not this long. I am currently experiencing nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and extreme drowsiness, which is making me very worried. However, I recently had a cold and mild pharyngitis, so I can't be sure what's going on. Can ectopic pregnancy be detected through a test? Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

An ectopic pregnancy test also shows positive, but this cannot confirm whether you have an ectopic pregnancy. You need to go to a regular specialized hospital for examination.
For ectopic pregnancy, it is recommended that the pregnancy test be positive after a 6-week menstrual period. Ultrasound scans or laparoscopy can assist in diagnosis.
The symptoms of ectopic pregnancy are often atypical, typically including bleeding and abdominal pain. If your menstrual cycle is regular, and if your period is delayed by 10-15 days, and there is no gestational sac visible on ultrasound, while the blood HCG levels are low and not doubling every other day, then ectopic pregnancy can be strongly suspected.
