Doctor, my wife and I had sex around September 22, and I'm early pregnant?

Patient's question:

Doctor, my wife and I had sex around September 22 this month. This month she didn't have her period, and recently she's been feeling nauseous and hasn't been eating. Today she went for a check-up and was told she's pregnant, with the baby at 5 weeks. What's going on?

Doctor's answer:

Performed ultrasound to confirm early pregnancy. Nausea and loss of appetite are normal early pregnancy symptoms. If unable to defecate or experiencing frequent dry heaves, be cautious of hyperemesis gravidarum. The estimated gestational age starts from the first day of the last menstrual period. For example, if your period starts on the 1st, you may ovulate around the 14th. If you have sexual intercourse before or after ovulation and discover your period hasn't arrived by the 28th to 30th, a positive urine test with two lines indicates an estimated gestational age of over 4 weeks. By the 5th of the next month (day 35 of the menstrual cycle), the gestational age would be 5 weeks. Generally, an ultrasound examination after day 35 can reveal a gestational sac.
