The book is divided into three parts: Upper Part: Primitive Art, Middle Part: Buddhist Period Art, Lower Part: Islamic Period Art. This division is only a rough chronological classification. For example, the content of primitive art not only includes art from primitive societies but also encompasses all ethnic groups and tribes in a primitive cultural state after the civilized history, with characteristics of "primitiveness." Buddhist Period Art primarily refers to the art of the Western Regions during the period from the introduction of Buddhism to the decline of Buddhism in the Western Regions. "Buddhist Period Art" is not a synonym for "Buddhist Art." Although this period was dominated by Buddhist art, it was not solely Buddhist art that ruled the Western Regions. Other religious arts and indigenous folk arts that did not fall under the Buddhist category were also active. Similarly, "Islamic Period Art" is not a synonym for "Islamic Art." It only refers to the art of the Western Regions from the introduction of Islam to the time when the term "Western Regions" was replaced by "Xinjiang." The definitions of the three periods of art in this book are mainly intended to highlight the narrative subjects of each period and do not exclude non-subject art of the same period.
