Features: Tuberculosis, which has claimed countless lives, was not considered incurable until the mid-20th century in 1945. The invention of antituberculosis plants—streptomycin and other important drugs—made tuberculosis treatable. China's tuberculosis epidemic is also severe, with over 400 million people infected with the tuberculosis bacterium. Each year, approximately 250,000 people die from tuberculosis, which is twice the total number of deaths from other infectious diseases. Rural areas in China have the highest number of tuberculosis cases, accounting for about 80%. Tuberculosis has become a major cause of poverty and relapse into poverty in rural areas; it is now the leading cause of death among young people. For this reason, tuberculosis in China has been included by the World Health Organization as one of the countries and regions requiring special attention, and the Ministry of Health has classified tuberculosis as one of the major diseases requiring national priority control.
According to the requirements of the editorial committee of the "Life's Great Wall—Popular Science Series for Public Health Emergencies," we organized five frontline medical personnel who primarily engage in clinical diagnosis, prevention, teaching, and research on tuberculosis and other infectious diseases to compile this volume of "Tuberculosis Prevention Knowledge." The goal is to make the content concise, easy to understand, and blend literary, scientific, and popular styles, so that a broad audience of readers can comprehend and appreciate the book, gaining knowledge about tuberculosis prevention and control.
