1. To criticize and inherit the legacy of Western literary theory, build a Marxist literary theory with Chinese characteristics, and promote the development of socialist literature in our country, we have selected some representative chapters of literary theory from ancient to modern times and compiled them into Selected Works of Famous Western Literary Theories, published in three volumes (Upper, Middle, and Lower).
2. To meet the teaching needs of higher education institutions, the selected materials are mostly masterpieces or notable works of Western literary theory, generally arranged in chronological order. However, from modern times onward, the order has been slightly adjusted to accommodate different schools of thought and trends. For historically significant works, efforts have been made to ensure completeness. If domestic translations are available and easily accessible, additional selections have been made accordingly.
3. To enrich and expand the compilation, we have organized a team to translate over 200,000 words of foreign-language materials, which have been included in this book for readers to analyze and critique. The newly translated materials mostly consist of literary theories that have had a significant impact in China but are relatively unfamiliar to readers, especially modern literary theories.
4. Considering the different roles of teaching materials, to avoid repetition, this book does not include works on Marxist literary theory, nor does it generally feature creative experience talks by writers and artists. The remarks of aestheticians and thinkers included are limited to those that pertain to literary theory.
5. In addition to this book, we have also compiled A Textbook on Famous Western Literary Theories, which analyzes and evaluates some important works in the history of Western literary theory. This book can serve as a teaching material for higher education institutions and is also available for reference by literary workers and enthusiasts.
