Practical Melody Studies: An Initial Exploration

Author: Yang Ruiqing
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-03-01
Features: The study of melody is extensive and complex. This book focuses on the research and interpretation of contemporary Chinese melodic forms, summarizing some rules and principles in melodic progression. It can also serve as a reference for composers. To embody practical principles, the table of contents is arranged in a simple and clear manner; the narrative is well-organized, combining text with musical scores. Most of the selected examples are classic and popular, Chinese-style excerpts, and are presented in simplified notation to meet the needs of most readers. The content discussed in the book is merely a fragmentary summary of the author's observations on melodic principles, and it is far from being comprehensive. The narrative framework and summaries of certain patterns can only be considered "a personal perspective." Further exploration and refinement are still needed. This exploratory work, "A Practical Approach to Melody Studies," can at most provide some practical experiences in melodic composition and serve as a reference for fellow researchers in melody studies. Sincerely, we hope that an authoritative "Chinese Melody Studies" can soon emerge.
