1. Introduction to the reform of the CET-6
The new College English Test Band 6 (CET-6) will increase the volume and proportion of listening comprehension questions, add a rapid reading comprehension test, and increase the proportion of non-selective questions. The new exam consists of four parts: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, comprehensive test, and writing test. Compared to the old exam, there are three major changes:
- The requirements for listening comprehension have been raised, and its weight has increased. The test points cover daily life scenarios, classroom discussions, news and current events, and short science and technology articles, focusing on pronunciation, comprehension, and dictation skills.
- In the reading section, the difficulty of intensive reading has greatly increased, with longer passages and frequent complex sentences of 30-40 words. The number of questions testing the precise understanding of local meanings in the text has also increased.
- Rapid reading places higher demands on candidates' reading speed and information retrieval skills.
- The vocabulary test has been abolished. Instead of testing word meaning differentiation, the focus shifts to candidates' understanding of words in their linguistic context, such as filling in words based on context in cloze tests.
- Short passage questions and translation also require a higher level of overall language mastery and application.
Changes in the scoring system:
- The scoring system has changed from the previous two tiers (pass and excellent) to a mean score of 500 and a maximum score of 710.
- The CET-6 certificate will no longer be issued, and the test results will no longer be linked to graduation.
- Score reports will be sent directly to candidates, including the total score and scores for each section.
- Employers can independently decide how to recruit job seekers based on clear English proficiency levels.
2. Impact of the new questions on vocabulary learning and countermeasures
1. Greatly reduces the difficulty of learning individual vocabulary.
2. Places higher demands on the reaction speed to words.
3. The scope of vocabulary assessed is broader.
