China 2010: Risks and Avoidance is the first book in both China and abroad that specifically discusses the risks China faces before 2010 and how to address them. With the help of experts from home and abroad, the authors have identified the risk factors that may affect China's sustainable economic and social development before 2010, the fields where risks may occur, and the extent of their impact on the national economy and social development. The main risks confirmed in the book include financial crises, the "three rural issues," China-U.S. relations and the Taiwan Strait issue, unemployment and social disparities, social order and public safety issues, ecological environment and energy crises, ethnic conflicts and governance issues, education and population quality issues, social and confidence crises, and public health crises. Among these, the financial crisis, the "three rural issues," unemployment and social disparities, and China-U.S. relations and the Taiwan Strait issue are most worthy of attention. These factors intersect, forming the challenges China faces before 2010.
The book argues that increasingly complex globalization and deep marketization will lead humanity to face more public affairs and more severe public crises, which will be a new, unavoidable challenge for human development in the 21st century. In the years to come, whether humanity can overcome unprecedented crises and challenges will depend not only on their ability to defeat nature through technology and tools but also on their ability to overcome themselves, to break free from their deeply rooted traditions and mindset, and to change the lifestyles and systems they have long been accustomed to.
