Patient's question:
What is chocolate cyst?Doctor's answer:
HelloChocolate cysts occur when endometrial tissue implants in the ovaries or pelvic appendages. During each menstrual period, these ectopic endometrial cells shed a small amount of blood. Unlike menstrual blood from the uterus, which has a channel to exit the body, this blood is enclosed by the peritoneum. It accumulates repeatedly, with the peritoneum absorbing some of it over time. The remaining blood becomes a stagnant, old blood that appears coffee-colored, resembling chocolate—hence the name "chocolate cyst." In most cases, surgical treatment can be effective!
