Features: "Idioms" have long played a crucial role in English. In fact, the use of idioms is so widespread that understanding them correctly has become a fundamental basis for successful communication in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students first learn grammar and then spend time mastering vocabulary, but if they cannot grasp such idiomatic expressions well—such as "above all," "get along," "on the whole," "to look up"—even if they speak fluently, their language will inevitably sound awkward and plain. We hope that experienced ESL or EFL teachers will largely agree with the idioms selected in this book. This edition has been updated to include some current idioms and remove outdated expressions. However, even with a careful selection process, some arbitrariness in word choice cannot be avoided, as we had to choose from a wide range. We edited this book with the aim of providing students with a useful reference tool to help them speak appropriate and modern English. This new edition of the classic idioms dictionary retains the original three-part structure: Beginner Level (to Lesson 13), Intermediate Level (Lessons 14 to 27), and Advanced Level (Lessons 28 to 39). This edition includes new idioms and removes outdated expressions. In each part, every lesson reinforces the content learned previously. Some definitions are annotated to explain their special usage or meaning, and the related collocations of the entry are also listed. Additionally, there are numerous exercises in different forms within each part.
