Patient's question:
Pregnant with 35.4 weeks? I've been sleeping on my left side since the second trimester because I'm used to it and can't sleep on my right side anymore. I heard suddenly that sleeping on one side can cause the baby to develop a torticollis. Is that true? Worried...Doctor's answer:
Lateral position is the best way for pregnant women to achieve deep sleep, as it can relax the abdominal muscles, maintain consistent breathing and blood flow, shift the right-rotated uterus to a straight position (preventing compression of the inferior vena cava), and increase cardiac output. This stabilizes placental blood flow, enhancing oxygen and nutrients for the baby. Baby's torticollis should have nothing to do with sleeping position. It's important to stay active but avoid strenuous exercise. Eat a light diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits.
