Features: "Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering" is a textbook written for undergraduate students of environmental-related majors in colleges and universities. It provides a comprehensive explanation of the basic professional content and knowledge in environmental engineering. Considering that schools will offer specialized courses on the content introduced in this book, the writing focuses only on introducing the scope of knowledge and basic principles. Environmental engineering is an emerging interdisciplinary science based on engineering science knowledge and methods. It is also an interdisciplinary engineering science. Especially since the 20th century, with the prominence of global ecological and environmental issues, scholars and engineering technicians from almost all disciplines have begun to apply their knowledge and skills to research and solve environmental protection-related problems in their respective fields, thereby accumulating extensive and rich content in the discipline of environmental engineering. At the same time, people have gained an understanding or interpretation of environmental engineering from multiple perspectives and viewpoints. Due to limitations in teaching and research resources, the emphasis on these knowledge contents in environmental engineering programs across different universities in China varies to some extent, with some key points even being omitted. As a result, undergraduate graduates of environmental engineering programs often exhibit certain differences in professional knowledge depending on the university they attended. To overcome this, we have written this "Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering." During the writing process, we referred to many relevant books and literature, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the relevant authors! Additionally, this book can also serve as a textbook for non-environmental major students in "Introduction to Environmental Engineering" courses or for engineering technicians working in environmental engineering. The entire book is edited by Professor Zhang Zhenjia of Shanghai Jiao Tong University as the chief editor, with Zhang Hong of Nanjing Institute of Technology as the deputy editor, and Professor Lin Rongchen of Tianjin University as the chief reviewer. Xue Yunbo of Nanjing Institute of Technology participated in the writing of Chapters 18–24, Wang Zhen participated in the writing of Chapters 26–33, and Peng Aoyu contributed to the drawing of some illustrations. We express our sincere gratitude to them. Due to the limitations of the authors' expertise, errors and shortcomings in this book are inevitable. We sincerely welcome criticism and corrections from all teachers and students. Editors January 2006, Shanghai
