Author Teng Xuyan obtained many little-known precious historical traces and life details about Peng Dehuai through multiple interviews with seven of his nieces and nephews, whom Peng Dehuai personally raised. Additionally, he interviewed many veteran generals and senior officials familiar with Peng Dehuai, collected and studied a large amount of historical documents and published works related to him. Based on solid historical materials, the book uses literary art as a medium to vividly depict the life stories of two generations of the Peng family, centered around Peng Dehuai, who were closely connected and shared joys and sorrows over half a century.
This book differs from previously published biographical works about Peng Dehuai. It does not comprehensively describe his entire life, nor does it repeat the grand scenes of him fighting on the battlefield with a sword in hand. It also does not recount the complex plot of his humiliation and injustice at the Lushan Conference. Instead, it portrays Peng Dehuai as an ordinary person, seeking the genuine emotions between him and his two wives and seven nieces and nephews. With a focus on the subtle details of the Peng family's daily life, the book writes about their joys, sorrows, and emotions, striving to delve into Peng Dehuai's rich inner emotional world. It aims to restore the image of a truly approachable Peng Dehuai, a man with unyielding backbone in the Chinese revolution and boundless compassion for his relatives and younger generations, and to recreate the heroic figure with profound personal charm who was willing to sacrifice himself for truth and the people.
The book is rich in historical materials, accurate in facts, and well-supported by evidence. It has a high tone, fluent writing, and is vivid and touching. Its legendary storyline and many newly disclosed historical facts make it highly readable. The book has 400,000 words, divided into 30 chapters, and includes over 60 historical photos provided by the Peng family.
