What are the fungi of the external genitalia?

Patient's question:

Main symptoms: Vulvar itching
Onset time: Most of the past 20 years it has been itchy
Laboratory test results: No Trichomonas vaginalis or Candida detected, leukorrhea culture was negative, ultrasound was normal

Doctor's answer:

Hello, fungal vulvitis is an inflammation of the vulva caused by a yeast-like fungus, with the most common pathogen being Candida albicans, accounting for approximately 80%-90% of infections. Fungal vulvitis often coexists with fungal vaginitis, referred to as fungal vulvovaginitis.
Recommendations:
1. Maintain vulvar hygiene: Clean the vulva daily with a 2%-4% soda solution, dry it thoroughly, and apply medications such as Econazole (Sporanox), Clotrimazole, or Nystatin cream. Alternatively, a 2% gentian violet solution may be used.
2. Treat underlying conditions or remove the causative factors, such as managing diabetes or discontinuing broad-spectrum antibiotics. If fungal vaginitis is also present, it should be treated concurrently.
3. If the male partner has genital fungal infection, he should also be treated. Avoid sexual intercourse until the infection is fully resolved.
