Features: Underwriting and claims handling are core operational aspects of the insurance industry. The essence of underwriting lies in the judgment and selection of insurable risks, being a process of matching underwriting conditions with risk situations. Insurance companies, characterized by risk management and operation, identify, control, and manage risks associated with their policies, which is the core work of the insurance enterprise. Underwriters, through the analysis of accumulated data, determine underwriting strategies based on the company's financial and operational capabilities, risk tolerance, business performance, and market conditions. Underwriting directly impacts the quality of business and profitability of the insurance company, serving as a critical checkpoint in risk prevention. Claims handling involves (reporting claims), on-site investigation, liability determination, loss assessment, and claim preparation and payment. Its core is to verify insurance coverage and determine the compensation amount and scope, reflecting the fulfillment of the insurance contract. Insurance companies must ensure accurate, prompt, and reasonable claims payment to satisfy customers, which entirely depends on a well-designed claims process. Claiming technical expertise and the quality of claims personnel directly influence customers' perceptions of the company's contract fulfillment and service levels. Customer satisfaction determines brand recognition and the ability to retain loyal customers, thereby expanding sales. On the other hand, the level of claims handling directly affects the company's loss ratio and ultimate profitability. Underwriting and claims handling occur daily, with the company's cash flow primarily managed through these two processes. Underwriting and claims handling are crucial checkpoints in the insurance enterprise's "revenue" and "expenditure" arteries, controlling the company's lifeline. Overall, underwriting and claims handling play a key role in enhancing the risk control capabilities, profitability, and reputation of insurance enterprises. With China's entry into the WTO, the insurance market has gradually opened up, accelerating the entry of foreign insurance institutions and increasing the number of domestic insurance market participants. Competition has become increasingly intense, and underwriting profits have gradually thinned. In the face of a rapidly changing market, only insurance companies that adhere to and implement sound underwriting and claims handling systems can ensure the achievement of their profitability goals and maintain financial stability and healthy business development. Insurance companies must establish a professional risk identification and control system, strengthen the management and control of the two key operational aspects—underwriting and claims handling—and systematically build a high-quality underwriting and claims handling team to enhance their competitiveness and adaptability to the market. To contribute to the improvement of underwriting and claims handling expertise in China's insurance industry, we have published this book.
