Why is there menstrual bleeding at 8 weeks of pregnancy

Patient's question:

My partner is 8 weeks pregnant and is currently bleeding. She used to have painful periods, but now she is only bleeding without any pain.

Doctor's answer:

Some women experience short-term, light vaginal bleeding around the time their period should arrive after becoming pregnant. This is not actually a period but rather decidual bleeding, known as "shijing" in traditional Chinese medicine. The occurrence of "period-like" bleeding after pregnancy may be a physiological response following the implantation of the fertilized egg. In the first three months of pregnancy, since the gestational sac has not yet occupied the entire uterine cavity, there is still a gap between the (bao tui mo) and the (bi tui mo). During the process of these membranes fusing, light vaginal bleeding can occur around the time of the expected period due to decidual shedding. This condition is more common in healthy individuals and has no adverse effects on the mother or fetal development. It does not require concern or treatment and typically disappears after the third month of pregnancy. However, if the bleeding is heavy, exceeds the amount of a normal period, or is accompanied by abdominal pain, it may indicate a threatened miscarriage, and medical attention should be sought promptly.
