Publish Date: 2006-02-01
Features: Li Shangyin's prose is fresh yet not frivolous, upright yet not delicate, ornate yet not licentious. Although described as four-six prose, it blends parallel and prose styles, with a higher literary status and a beauty of sentiment. In the preface to The First Collection of Fan Nan, he said: "Later, he served twice as an official in the Secretariat, indulging in ancient collections, often being moved by Ren, Fan, Xu, and Yu. When asked to write, he sometimes produced excellent parallel couplets, with a powerful sound and scene, evoking a sense of sorrow and grandeur that moved people." His parallel prose is harmonious in rhythm and full of momentum, which is difficult to achieve. Adding to this, "evoking a sense of sorrow and grandeur that moved people" further illustrates that his parallel prose blends parallel and prose styles, achieving a rich and intricate beauty, full of sentiment. Li Shangyin was a great poet of late Tang, with most of his works being odes to objects, historical reflections, sentiments, political satire, and love poems. His verses are elegant and profound, leaving a significant influence on later generations. His prose combines parallel and prose styles, fresh and upright. The book collects 200 poems and 27 prose pieces by Li Shangyin. Mr. Zhou Zhenfu, with his profound expertise in traditional Chinese studies, provides clear and concise annotations on the challenging words and phrases in the works, as well as on the literary context, making it easier for readers to fully and deeply understand the ideological content and artistic features of Li Shangyin's poetry and prose, as well as the rich emotions they contain. The preface to this book introduces "Li Shangyin's Poetry and Prose" and "Li Shangyin's Life," collecting nearly 200 poems and over 20 prose pieces. It covers Li Shangyin's surviving works.
