Features: The Treatise on Cold Damage was written by Zhang Ji (Zhongjing) of the Late Han Dynasty and is considered the (zǔ) of prescription books, compiled around the year 200 AD. It underwent multiple revisions by figures such as Wang Shuhe of the Jin Dynasty, Gao Jichong of the Tang Dynasty, and Lin Yi of the Song Dynasty. By the Jin Dynasty, Cheng Wuji further compiled, annotated, and organized The Treatise on Cold Damage, with the book completed in 1144 AD. It is the earliest extant fully annotated version of The Treatise on Cold Damage. The Annotated Treatise on Cold Damage has two distinctive features: 1) It presents a unique arrangement of the original text of The Treatise on Cold Damage, known as the Cheng Wuji edition. 2) Cheng's annotations are detailed and insightful, with Ming Dynasty scholar Zhao Kaimei praising them as "extensive in knowledge and profound in research, achieving self-mastery." The book systematically and comprehensively explores Zhongjing's theory of cold damage, and its annotations have had a profound influence on generations of medical practitioners and researchers of The Treatise on Cold Damage in China, Japan, and other countries.
