How long after childbirth can an IUD be inserted?

Patient's question:

I got married last year. Recently, I've been experiencing lower abdominal pain, especially during my period. I'm very worried about it affecting fertility, and I also feel extremely cold and afraid of the cold. How long after childbirth can I get an IUD inserted?

Doctor's answer:

After a cesarean section, it is generally recommended to wait for 3-6 months before inserting an IUD, while after a vaginal birth, it can be done 3 months postpartum. However, it is essential to rule out pregnancy first. Usually, the IUD is inserted 3-7 days after the menstrual period ends.
Three days before the insertion, sexual intercourse should be avoided. After insertion, sexual intercourse should not be resumed for half a month, and tub baths, heavy physical labor, and other strenuous activities should also be avoided. Women who have had an IUD inserted should undergo follow-up examinations at the hospital in the first, third, and sixth months after insertion, and at least once a year thereafter.
Inserting an IUD may cause some pain, but it is usually manageable.
