Features: Liu Lingcang (1907–1989), styled Enhan, was born in Gu'an County, Hebei Province. In his youth, he studied painting under the folk artist Li Dongyuan and later accompanied his teacher to Beijing, where he engaged in the restoration of murals and illustrated historical stories. In 1926, he joined the Chinese Painting Research Institute, studying traditional Chinese painting under Xu Yansun and Guan Pinghu, specializing in meticulous brushwork and heavy colors. He also served as an editor for Yilin Xinkan (Weekly Art Forest) and Yilin Yuekan (Monthly Art Forest). Later, he furthered his studies at the Beiping Art College. From 1933 to 1937, he served as a lecturer at Beiping Art College and concurrently as a professor at the Beijing Huajia Art College. In 1949, he joined the National Art Research Institute and the following year began teaching at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he served as a professor and head of the figure painting department in the Chinese Painting Department. He was a member of the Chinese Artists Association and served as the honorary president of the Beijing Meticulous Brushwork and Heavy Color Painting Association. He excelled in historical paintings and portraits. In his early career, his works were primarily executed in meticulous brushwork and heavy colors, but later he gradually incorporated freehand techniques. His notable works include The Battle of Wuyan by the Red-Browed Army (exhibited at the Chinese History Museum), The Battle of Feishui, and Zhuo Wenjin Listening to Music. He also authored works such as Tang Dynasty Figure Painting, Techniques of Chinese Heavy Color Figure Painting, Tools and Materials of Chinese Painting, and Techniques of Folk Murals.
