When to do the glucose screening

Patient's question:

I had a glucose screening test at 26 weeks of pregnancy, but after drinking the glucose solution, I vomited more than half an hour later. I asked the doctor, and she said I couldn't eat anymore. The test results came back as 5.4. Do I need to redo the glucose screening test? I am now 29 weeks pregnant. If I decide to do another glucose screening test, what would be a suitable time to do it?

Doctor's answer:

The Down syndrome screening is primarily aimed at identifying the risk of developing trisomy 18, trisomy 21, and neural tube defects in a timely manner, allowing for timely intervention. However, it is not a mandatory test for every pregnant woman. However, for high-risk populations, it is recommended to undergo the screening. Common high-risk factors include pregnant women over the age of 35, those who have previously given birth or have a family history of Down syndrome, exposure to teratogenic factors such as radiation or viruses during the early stages of pregnancy, and a fetus indicated by ultrasound.
