Features: To adapt to the development of piano teaching in higher music (normal) colleges, the Central Conservatory of Music Press, newly established in 2003, initiated a joint editorial meeting for the "Graded Piano Course for Higher Music (Normal) Colleges." Led by the Piano Department of the Central Conservatory of Music, the meeting brought together 14 professors from top music institutions across the country with rich teaching experience. Through the dedicated efforts of over 20 teachers on the editorial committee (providing pieces and writing performance notes, etc.), as well as the meticulous review by the chief editor, Professor Yang Ming, and associate editors, Professor Li Xin and Professor Chen Zai Feng, this six-volume piano textbook was finally published before the new academic semester in 2004. The reason for structuring the textbook in a graded format was to consider the differences in piano foundations and learning needs among college music students. In the selection of pieces and writing of performance notes, emphasis was placed on conciseness and practicality. The level division was designed to align with social examination syllabi (levels 1–8, corresponding to volumes 1–4) while also catering to the needs of students aiming for a professional piano career (levels 9–10, corresponding to volumes 5–6). Each level includes: basic exercises, etudes, polyphonic pieces, and general pieces (including four-hand piano pieces). The repertoire range of this textbook is suitable for piano students in various music colleges, excluding those in independent music conservatories with specialized piano majors. It serves as both a piano learning curriculum and an important benchmark for assessing students' piano proficiency. Institutions using this textbook are recommended to issue certificates to students who pass the corresponding level exams, providing a credible basis for societal evaluation of their piano performance skills for future professional careers. This textbook is open and evolving, and it will be continuously revised and improved in subsequent editions based on the needs of its users. Building on the foundations of other textbooks, this course highlights two key features: 1. It is a step-by-step teaching book. During our teaching tours to various regions, we found that many teachers in remote areas face challenges in selecting appropriate teaching materials. 2. It is a practical, concise, and actionable teaching methods book.
