The criteria for selecting the Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries in China must comply with the Cultural Relics Protection Law of the People's Republic of China and the Implementation Rules for the Cultural Relics Protection Law of the People's Republic of China. Each archaeological excavation must undergo approval procedures and obtain approval from the State Administration of Cultural Relics. During the excavation process, archaeological work must be conducted in accordance with the Field Archaeological Work Procedures promulgated by the State Administration of Cultural Relics to ensure the scientific quality of the excavations. The selection criteria for new archaeological discoveries are stipulated in Article 2 of the Cultural Relics Protection Law of the People's Republic of China, emphasizing historical, artistic, and scientific value. The term "new discovery" refers to an archaeological finding that, in addition to possessing historical, artistic, and scientific value, also contributes new content and insights to the development of archaeological disciplines in China.
